NOW is the almost-winter of my discontent. At this particular time of year, with two seasons of fabulous fashion clambering to be adored, I’m like a cat with two tails, a dog with two dicks, and there’s so much I want that I don’t know what I want – if you know what I mean! As I’m having fun with my summer wardrobe (it’s been so great actually being able to wear summer clothes these last few months – it’s not often the Irish weather obliges!), I’m being distracted by the new-season buys, sneakily appearing in shops and on websites and flirting with me, beckoning to me with their weight, their substance, so different to the light, breezy styles of summer. It’s too much for a (greedy) girl to take.
My end-of-summer focus is usually on coats, sweaters and boots. One great, go-to knit, teamed with a smart winter coat and good boots can see you through any number of adventures, I firmly believe (it is advisable to wear clothing on your nether regions, too, though), and, once I get those sorted, everything else can follow.
I always like to start high, ogling those garments that hang higher up on the price range and boast the fanciest labels. Then, as soon as I have an idea how I’d like to adorn my goosebumps when the warm weather passes, I start trawling the second-hand sites and sales for similar styles.
But first, the fun part – the high fashion ogling! And, sure, it’s too early – you know that, I know that – but sometimes it helps for a girl to feel a little bit prepared. So, here’s some new-season inspiration. Have a look. Flirt. Fall in love. Then hopefully you’ll have something to look forward to when the evenings begin to draw in again.
By the way, please don’t think I haven’t noticed the massive price tags on some of these babies. While, yes, I agree that a good winter coat is worth splashing out on, €500 is prohibitive, to say the very least. My advice, if you like some of these more expensive styles, is to check out www.vestiairecollective.com (my favourite!). Here you’ll find lots of coats from Maje, Sandro, The Kooples and soooo much more, all massively reduced. And let’s not forget the high street stores, who all take inspiration from the big designers and do an incredible job of refashioning those designs at affordable prices. So don’t let price put you off – where there’s a want, there’s a way!
I’m liking knit prints this season. Clearly.
Motorbike boots are a bit of a thing for autumn/winter so, whether you’re looking for boots or shoes, think comfortable, substantial, sensible. Your granny would approve.
Bimba Y Lola €245
Topshop £62 (online price)
All topped off with this ridiculously expensive but undeniably fab-u-lous chunky knitted hat from Marcus Lupfer, reduced to half-price on Asos (but still a hefty €100).
And so, having indulged ourselves with a glimpse ahead to the next season, let’s now retire back to summer and enjoy those barbecues and garden parties – while we still can!
Hope you’re all having fun!
